Andhra Pradesh Government Gives Nod to Bauxite Mining in Visakha Agency

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who had opposed the then YS Rajasekhara Reddy government’s proposal to allow Bauxite mining in Visakhapatnam Agency area in the capacity of the Opposition leader, has now given his nod for the same.
The State government issued an order for diversion of 1,212 hectares of forest land in Chintapalli and Jerrila Reserve Forest area of Narasipatnam Forest Division of Visakhapatnam district for mining lease for Bauxite in favour of the AP Mineral Development Corporation Limited (APMDC), even as opposition parties, local tribals, environmentalists and Maoists are opposing the proposal.
According to sources, Naidu has taken this decision to mobilise funds in order to construct the new capital city, Amaravati. According to the GO, the Government of India, Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change, had recently accorded approval under Section-2 of the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980, for diversion of the land for mining lease for Bauxite, subject to certain conditions.
The GO further added that the State government accorded permission to the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests & Head of Forest Force, AP, for diversion of 1,212 hectares of forest land in Narasipatnam Forest Division for mining lease for Bauxite, in favour of APMDC, subject to conditions. The legal status of the forest land being diverted will remain unchanged and the compensatory afforestation over non-forest land equal in extent to the forest land being diverted, will be raised and maintained by the State Forest Department from the funds already provided by the user agency.
